Sound Recording

 

 

It is very useful to record audio from your scanner while it is unattended. There are a

number of methods to achieve this, but I have opted to show two software methods for the PC.

 

These programs will only record when audio is detected, thus keeping the file size to a minimum.

You will need an audio lead from the 'tape out' or 'earpiece' socket to the 'line in' of your sound card.

     

RecAll-PRO TM is based on the recording program RecAll - adding several features for advanced users, including hot-keys, edit menu commands, game-port control, VOX disable and hide, and sound card driver selection.

Adds these additional features to RecAll standard-edition:

       User-definable hot-keys for starting and stopping recording and playback. This is useful for dictation  

       and transcription, for controlling the program while working in another application.

 

Game port interface, for interfacing the program to external electronic devices.

Wave driver selection, for systems with several wave devices. Edit menu commands, for extracting portions of the audio file to a different file. Very fast direct-to-file edit commands. RecAll-PRO can write and read MP3 files, but only if you have an MPEG ACM codec already installed on your computer.

 

 

   

Scanner Recorder (Scanrec) is a free audio recorder that is primarily designed to record speech. It has a VOX control that allows the user to save disk space when no sound is present in the signal.

Since FM communications has such an effective squelch, the recorder works best with FM.

HF ham bands and World Band radio have such a poor signal to noise ratio that the VOX gate on Scanrec might not be very easy to set.

Some of the uses of Scanner Recorder are:

  • Recording radio communications.

  • Recording channels that hardly ever have activity. Catch rarely heard conversations.

  • Air traffic control recording.

  • Dictation.

  • Record (compressed) broadcast radio or TV and listen to it when it's more convenient.
